The capital of the Albanian Riviera – Saranda is situated in the south of Albania, by the Ionian Sea, close to the border with Greece and opposite Corfu, which is just a short catamaran cruise away. There’s a beautiful promenade here with palm trees, which is the center of the resort, shops and pubs. Along the seaside boardwalk there are beaches – mostly shingle, with a view of Corfu island. Saranda has a very long history, remembering the days of the Illyrians and the Romans. On the hill there are ruins of the medieval fortress Lekures, currently locating a good restaurant. On the neighboring hill Gjashete are the remains of the Byzantine Church of the Forty Martyrs.
